Shift P.O.V.

Shift P.O.V. (Point Of View) is a new structured experience designed for processing difficult issues in business teams. Participants have the chance to literally step into other points of view and different angles of a problem they are trying to resolve within tightly timed discussion rounds intersected by the Random Factors – unique and surprising insight prompts.
"Shift POV card game is perfect for opening team dialogue and was exactly what this team needed to encourage challenging topics and create space to explore different sides. The conversation got deep as a result. THANK YOU!! Could not have achieved this without this game. I will definitely be using this again!"

Here’s a quick 5 minute intro:

Here are how it is played:

Participants are asked to begin the first discussion round by picking a POV card: Activator, On the Fence, Skeptic relative to the issue being discussed.

From there, a participant’s input into the first discussion will be determined by the card chosen. For example: An Activator could be aligned and enthused about a new idea or development, a Skeptic would resist, and On the Fence will be encouraged to choose the side they are leaning towards, as a way to experience full commitment to one POV.   The discussion proceeds for 7-10 minutes,  then everyone chooses a card from the *Random Factor pile. There are 3 kinds of cards here: Actions, Observations, Questions. Participants will perform the activity, consider the question, or make the observation for a period of 1 minute, and then Round 2 of the discussion begins.

Now everyone engages the issue from the POV OPPOSITE to their starting position: ex: An Activator in Round 1 is now a Skeptic for Round 2 and vice versa. So round 2 consists of Activators and Skeptics. Again, the action is timed for 7-10 minutes, and another Random Factor card is pulled. The third round is determined by where the group wants to go: either to tackle an issue that has come up in the first two rounds, OR begin brainstorming on possible ways forward. OR there could be another option that presents itself… It is not necessary to pick a POV card for the third round.

*A Note on the Random Factors (RF):  These cards have been developed as insight and creativity prompts.  Each suit is numbered so that the Facilitator can strategically choose which RF’s would most benefit a particular group, and set the others aside.

Our research categorizes typical group dynamics into three broad types:

Tentative:

  • Issues:  hesitant, polite, lack of trust, difficult to engage
  • Needs: Safe space for authenticity
  • Random Factor Cards 1-5 in all suits

Stuck on the Surface:

  • Issues: impatient, rushed, distracted, “hates meetings”, difficult to get their best input
  • Needs: Opportunities to slow down, become more mindful and “present” in the interactions
  • Random Factor Cards 6-10 in all suits

Hyper-Competitive:

  • Issues: Jostling for Status, power-over dynamics, lack of trust or mutual respect
  • Needs: Build focus on and appreciation for others, spark curiosity instead of judgement
  • Random Factor Cards
  • 11-15
